2009 Saints off to a Great Start

The New Orleans Saints could not be happier with how their season has begun. With a 2-0 start they are sitting atop the NFC South. These Saints are for real.

Opening day the Saints took out the Detroit Lions 45-27 at the Superdome. The offense scored on its first two possessions, exhibiting its power on the field. Quarterback Drew Brees completed 26 of his 34 passes, with one interception, for a total of 358 yards. Brees connected with nine different receivers, displaying quick, smart decision making and excellent timing. He ended the game with six touchdowns.

Running back Mike Bell had a record setting day rushing 28 times for 143 yards, both career bests. Aside from one turnover he seems the perfect fit for the Saints featured back.

The defense gave up 27 points, but seven were due to a fumble on the 10 yard line run in for a touchdown. Also the Saints defense had to deal with terrible field position for the whole game, but was able to come away with three interceptions.

Week two put the Saints against the Philadelphia Eagles. The Saints put up 48 points to the Eagles’ 22. Once again the offense was clicking on all cylinders. Quarterback Drew Brees had another good day, completing 25 of 34 passes for 311 yards with one interception with three touchdowns. He once again seemed to be in complete control of the offense and spread the ball around, connecting with eight different receivers.

Mike Bell rushed for 17 carries for 86 yards, a 5.1 yard average per carry.

The defense gave up 463 total yards to Philly, and that needs to improve. As long as they continue forcing turnovers, they had 3 that led to scores, they will be fine.

All in all, the New Orleans Saints are looking great. Maybe this will be the year. Geaux Saints!
